This Fall, Mr. Raashiq Ishraaq and Mr. Ghansham Channel have started their Ph.D. journey at SMIEL. We wish them a great tenure at SMIEL.

In this collaborative study with the group of Prof. Liangbing Hu in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, UMD, we describe the behavior of wood as an ionic cable. SMIEL’s contribution in this paper is the through the development of theoretical model for calculating the ionic conductivity in wood nanochannels. This is Guang’s 27th

SMIEL Ph.D. student Turash Haque Pial wins the STLE (Society of Tribology and Lubrication Engineering) Philadelphia section Scholarship. Previously, three more Ph.D. students from SMIEL, Shayandev Sinha, Parth Desai, and Harnoor Singh Sachar had also won this Fellowship. 

In this paper, we employ all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for studying the temperature response of densely grafted polyelectrolyte brushes. This is Harnoor’s 26th, Bhargav’s 5th, and Turash’s 7th paper from the group.

Das group has received funding from NextFlex on a project dedicated to study the reliability of printed and flexible hybrid electronics. In this project, University of Maryland (Prof. Das is a co-PI of the UMD team) has teamed up with Lockheed Martins and Binghamton University.

In this paper, we discover through simulations a new material: nanotube-salt-water hybrid, where water is entrapped in 0D state and anions are rendered highly immobile confined within a 1D nanostructure (namely Boron nitride nanotube). This is Bhargav’s 4th paper and Yanbin’s 19th paper from the group. Congrats both.

In this paper, we report the fabrication and performance of all additively manufactured conical inductors. This is SMIEL’s former postdoc Dr. Chenglin Yi’s 1st paper from the group.

In this paper, we quantify the effect of monovalent and multi-valent counterions in bridging interactions that ultimately dictate the height of the polyelectrolyte brushes (whose charges are screened by these counterions). This is Turash’s 6th and Harnoor’s 25th paper from the group. Congratulations All !!!

Dr. Xiao Zhang has joined SMIEL as a postdoctoral researcher to work on printed electronics. Welcome on board, Xiao.

Harnoor Singh Sachar (Ph.D. student fo SMIEL) defends his thesis (titled: “ATOMISTIC AND THEORETICAL DESCRIPTION OF LIQUID FLOWS IN POLYELECTROLYTE-BRUSH-GRAFTED NANOCHANNELS”) successfully. Congrats !!!!
