Siddhartha Das

This paper, written with Prof. Thundat and other members of University of Alberta, studies the interfacial dynamics of SAGD water.

Dr. Yuan Gu has started as a Postdoc in SMIEL from October 1, 2016. He is jointly advised by Prof. Das and Prof. Dasgupta and will be actively working in the LPS on the 3-D printed electronics. Yuan has completed his PhD in physics from New Jersey Institute of Technology.

In this paper, Dr. Das and his students collaborate with Prof. Bing Hu of Materials Science and Engineering, UMD to study the property of wood nanochannels as wood carbon monolith reactor.

SMIEL has received funding from CECD (Center for Engineering Concepts Development), UMD for the proposal “Probing Water–Holey-Graphene interactions for Removing Lead from Water and Oil-Water Separation”.

News on the PCCP Cover article on graphene’s wetting dynamics has been published on the web page of Department of Mechanical Engineering with the title “Exploration of Graphene’s Wetting Dynamics Could Open New Possibilities in Fluid Mechanics of Two-Dimensional Materials“.

SMIEL is the part of the $3.1M proposal winning team. Funding is coming from NextFlex and UMD (headed by Dr. Siddhartha Das) share is $500K. In this proposal, the UMD team will collaborate with Lockheed Martin, GE-Global Research, Optomec, Binghampton University, and Intrinsiq Materials on 3-D printing onto complex surfaces. Joseph’s paper on wetting of graphene published in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics has been selected as the Inside Front Cover of the journal.

This funding will help Dr. Das work with a NAVAIR expert to 3-D print composite structures for aviation applications.
